I am often in the ocean for long snorkel/free dive excursions both in Hawaii and Fiji. I noticed that most of the ocean creatures and coral reefs were the same or similar in both locations. But the bright color of the blue sea star is something we do not see in Hawaii. Also another creature seen only in Fiji is the little blue-spotted ray who is tan-brown above and is covered with bright blue spots over the disc, I decided to follow the blue theme in Count the Blue and painted pictures of blue creatures that I was seeing in Fiji. Because I am a teacher I made a counting book for young children. The multiple languages reflect some of the languages spoken around the Pacific Ocean where these creatures live. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Do you want to help Honu and her friends? When you go into the ocean to visit Honu do not chase after her. Honu will come to you. Touch only with your eyes. Take nothing away from Honu’s home, except debri left by other people. Never feed wild creatures, this interferes with their food chain and the balance of nature. Avoid polluting the water by wearing a rash guard or t-shirt to protect your skin. Defog your mask with baby shampoo or a natural toothpaste. Have fun and take someone with you. Honu has led me to some new
friends ~ the Spinner Dolphins. Barbara Elaine Hänni Berg, M.A, is a Special Education Teacher who first came to Maui in the 1970’s. She swims and dives with Honu several times a week primarily in reserve waters. The illustrations come from repeated contact with Honu, and are a pictorial journal of her experiences. Palapala says, “While gazing into Honu’s eyes, I felt my heart begin to melt and my emotions overflowed. I believe that Honu adopted and guides me. This book grew out of my feelings of a profound respect and love for Honu, the environment, and a desire to share this with others. Celebrate Life!
